{"id":66,"date":"2022-11-19T13:21:06","date_gmt":"2022-11-19T13:21:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dzp.usm.mybluehost.me\/adsgroup\/?p=66"},"modified":"2022-11-19T13:21:11","modified_gmt":"2022-11-19T13:21:11","slug":"urban-rail-boost-could-support-africas-sustainable-future-alstom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adsgroupng.com\/?p=66","title":{"rendered":"Urban rail boost could support Africa\u2019s sustainable future \u2013\u00a0Alstom"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>f the modal share of urban\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/rail\">rail<\/a>\u00a0in African cities increases to 10% in 2030 and 20% in 2050, compared with the baseline scenario of 1% today, one gigaton of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions could be avoided between 2023 and 2050, says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/rail\">rail<\/a>\u00a0mobility\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/solutions\">solutions<\/a>\u00a0group Alstom in a new report titled \u2018The Role of Urban\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/rail\">Rail<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/sustainable\">Sustainable<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/africa\">Africa<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is equal to 32% of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/africa\">Africa<\/a>\u2019s total greenhouse-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/gas\">gas<\/a>\u00a0emissions in 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, 173-million additional tons of CO2&nbsp;would be avoided between 2023 and 2050 if urban&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/rail\">rail<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/systems\">systems<\/a>&nbsp;were fully powered by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/renewable-energy\">renewable energy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A strong move to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/rail\">rail<\/a>\u00a0would also see a daily reduction of eight-million cars on African\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/roads\">roads<\/a>\u00a0in 2030, and 29-million in 2050, leading to a significant decrease in congestion,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/road\">road<\/a>\u00a0accidents and air pollution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A strong shift from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/road\">road<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/rail\">rail<\/a>&nbsp;could also support job creation related to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/construction\">construction<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/operations\">operations<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/maintenance\">maintenance<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/africa\">Africa<\/a>, estimated at about 258 jobs a kilometre of new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/rail\">rail<\/a>&nbsp;built. For example, a 60 km urban&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/project\">project<\/a>&nbsp;would create more than 15 000 direct jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alstom says the study demonstrates how increased investments in urban&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/rail\">rail<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/transport\">transport<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/africa\">Africa<\/a>&nbsp;could deliver&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/environmental\">environmental<\/a>, social and economic benefits for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/africa\">Africa<\/a>\u2019s growing cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/africa\">Africa<\/a>\u00a0has a fast-growing population and the world\u2019s highest urbanisation rate.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The continent\u2019s urban population is expected to increase from 600-million people in 2021, to more than 1.3-billion people in 2050.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key challenge is to ensure that this growth meets the United Nations\u2019&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/sustainable\">Sustainable<\/a>&nbsp;Development Goal 11, which is to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/sustainable\">sustainable<\/a>, notes the Alstom report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis new study shows that for this to happen, African cities must advocate to develop more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/sustainable\">sustainable<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/transport\">transport<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/systems\">systems<\/a>, both to reduce carbon emissions and foster inclusive socioeconomic growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith COP27\u2019s focus on implementation, Alstom commissioned this study with EY Climate Change and Sustainability&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/services\">Services<\/a>&nbsp;to highlight the many benefits that increased investment in urban public&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/transport\">transport<\/a>&nbsp;can bring to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/africa\">Africa<\/a>\u2019s cities, supporting their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/sustainable\">sustainable<\/a>&nbsp;growth,\u201d says Alstom corporate social responsibility and sustainability VP<strong>&nbsp;C\u00e9cile Texier<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is indeed demonstrated that every increase in a modal shift to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/rail\">rail<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/transport\">transport<\/a>\u00a0will bring better access to socioeconomic opportunities, reduced congestion, increased\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/safety\">safety<\/a>\u00a0and improved air quality, on top of decarbonisation.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the International\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/energy\">Energy<\/a>\u00a0Agency, passenger\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/rail\">rail<\/a>\u2019s modal share has stagnated globally at around 6% to 7% for a decade, and must grow by more than 40% in the next decade for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/topic\/transport\">transport<\/a>\u00a0to remain on track to meet net zero.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>f the modal share of urban\u00a0rail\u00a0in African cities increases to 10% in 2030 and 20% in 2050, compared with the baseline scenario of 1% today, one gigaton of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions could be avoided between 2023 and 2050, says\u00a0rail\u00a0mobility\u00a0solutions\u00a0group Alstom in a new report titled \u2018The Role of Urban\u00a0Rail\u00a0in\u00a0Sustainable\u00a0Africa\u2019.
